In order to participate in a school sport, all athletes must have a current physical on file within one calendar year of the sports season. All physical forms should be given to our Athletic Director (Mr. Snyder) during Physical Education class. He will be sure that they are filed properly and provided directly to our school nurse. Students must also complete the IMPACT concussion test online within 2 years of participation. Any student who still needs to complete the IMPACT concussion test will be sent a link to their school email with instructions on how to complete the test. Students must complete all three steps (sign-up, current physical, and complete the IMPACT test) to be eligible to participate in a school sport.
The mission of the Cheektowaga-Sloan Union Free School District's interscholastic athletic program is to provide all students with an education-based program of equal opportunity in athletics in an environment in which student athletes will have the ability to develop and grow beyond sport-specific skills.
More specifically, the program should promote:
Good personal traits which include a strong work ethic, self-discipline, good sportsmanship, and positive self-esteem.
A healthy, positive, respectful attitude and life skills such as teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and good citizenship.
Athletic and educational opportunities beyond high school, including the importance of life-long learning.
Individual and team skill development and habits leading to respectful and honorable character as well as good personal health.
Opportunities to experience enjoyment through competition.
The Board of Education recognizes that concussions and head injuries are the most commonly reported injuries in children and adolescents who participate in sports and recreation activities. A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). A concussion occurs when normal brain functioning is disrupted by a blow or jolt to the head or body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Recovery from concussions and its symptoms will vary. Avoiding re-injury and over-exertion until fully recovered are the cornerstones of proper concussion management.
Below are some resources for parents and students regarding concussion management. Please contact your school nurse should you have any further questions.
